Making Mental Room for New Ideas

I’ve been thinking about how many new ideas there are available to us today.  And how often I hear an interesting one without taking any action on it.  Soon enough it has vanished leaving  little or no trace behind.  Why does this happen?

An idea, good, bad or indifferent, needs time and more importantly room to grow.  If we are too busy, too fast, or too full to give it any brain space, it must be cast aside.  It’s like my granddaughter.  Sometimes her pockets get so full she absolutely cannot put another thing in them.  So with our minds, we must sometimes empty a space if we want something new to come to us.

This can be challenging, as we are used to our old ideas and even if we don’t like how they operate,  they have become our default mode of thinking.  They are like old friends, we know how they work and what the outcome will be.

Consider that making friends with a new idea can be an exciting, eye-opening event that can lead to new possibilities and outcomes.  Find some quiet time to give some mental room to the new ideas you meet every day.

Keep a pocket notepad and jot a reminder to yourself of something interesting to consider.  Read your note pad when you are stuck in a waiting line or sitting in the airport or riding in your car pool.  Not only will the time pass faster and more enjoyably, you will be a more interesting person after your wait.
