Fractals & the Fear of Selling
Fearless Selling Tip: How to Start to Change a Fear
When you are confronting something like Fear of Selling (cue the ominous music in the background), it can seem like there is no place and no way to start changing your emotional set point. The fear can be so large that it seems impossible to get a handle on it. And when you are looking at the problem in it’s entirety, that is likely true for you.
The good news is that you don’t have to change it all – or all at once- to make a huge difference in your ability to function.
I was thinking about fractals today, and how they apply all through our lives. Fractals demonstrate hope and a blueprint for change.
Fractals are patterns that are found in Nature in which the large shape of something is mirrored in the smallest part of it. The topline of a single peak in a mountain chain can reflect the topline of the entire range in eerie exactness. The shape of a tree leaf can mimics the shape of the entire tree viewed from a distance. (There are some absolutely beautiful photo books that demonstrate this – browse your favorite bookstore and you will be rewarded with a feast for the eyes.)
To combat fear of selling ( or anything else for that matter) use a secret talisman – wear the socks you wore when you closed the last deal; put your son’s macaroni necklace Christmas gift in your briefcase pocket, carry your Dad’s pen in your pocket(book). Take a physical reminder of happy confident times with you like a magic charm. Why do you think champion athletes refuse to shave , or wear the same number as their hero, or carry an extra pound of golden neckchains in a sprint? It’s their fractal statement that they aren’t afraid; that they remember what it feels like to win!
Everything in life is related. When we take even the tiniest step or make a slight change, it shows up in our life in countless ways – if you take the time to notice. And if you take the time, along with a deep breath, to remember that unbeknownst to your client YOU have the magic in your pocket and you know how to use it.
Humor alone is a powerful antidote to fear. Take fear more lightly and it will have less effect on you.
